Gerber Applegate-Fairbarn Combat Folder |
Gerber Applegate-Fairbarn Combat Folder Yes, this is the knife to pull out when you simply have to impress. This is about the same size as my CRKT M16-14, but much lighter and slimmer due to its composite handle. The Applegate-Fairbarn folders tend to be a bit stiff and difficult to open. This one is no exception. You really need to work with it for a bit and develop your technique. Once you get the hang of it, it locks in place quickly and positively. Unlike the CRKT, it does not have a kicker...you have to build up your lateral thumb strength. The profile of the handle is very slim and comfortable in the hand. Both edges of the blade are hollow-ground, though only one is sharpened. The blade is recessed far enough into the handle when closed that you could actually sharpen both edges, but I'm very leery of carrying a double-edged knife. The quality of the blade is absolutely excellent. The belt clip is pretty stiff, but the slim profile of the knife makes it possible to carry it clipped to your waistband on a daily basis. Yes, I really did try to go through TSA security at an airport carrying one of these a few years back. It was almost worth losing the knife just to see the expressions on the other passengers' faces when the airport cop took the knife from me ("Sir, keep your hands away from your body and just tell us where the knife is!") and opened it in front of everyone. Everyone was actually pretty nice about the whole incident. Or, at least they let me board the plane...minus the knife. Back to picture of all automatic and assisted-opening knives. |
